Like a Mountain
Lauren was jumping on the trampoline with her cousin, Laney. Laney was a year older and lived in Oregon. It was fall break and both the girls were out of school. Laney and her parents had flown in for Nana’s 70th birthday party. Nana was inside making lunch; homemade chili and grilled cheese sandwiches. The two girls were jumping really high…so high they could see the roof of the house.
“Nana’s getting old, I heard my dad say
she wouldn’t be around forever.”Laney said confidently.
Lauren stopped jumping.Their Nana walked out with a tray…it was lunch time. Laney stopped jumping and hopped off the trampoline. Lauren followed. They bowed their heads as their Nana said a prayer and then they began to eat. Laney was a chatter bug…she talked about school and about a cute boy in her class…and how her cat Winston would lay on her face until
she got out of bed in the morning. Lauren was quiet, she ate a little bit of Chili but didn’t touch her grilled cheese. Grilled cheese was always her favorite. After lunch, they all cleaned up. When Laney announced she was taking an afternoon nap, Nana decided she would find out what was troubling Lauren. Lauren was sitting in the sunroom reading her book. She smiled when her Nana entered the room. Nana sat next to Lauren and asked what was bothering her.Lauren was silent for a moment.
“Nana, will you be here forever?” She asked softly.
Nana reached out and grabbed her hand.
“No, but I will be here as long as the
good Lord gives me breath.”
“Oh.”Lauren was quiet again. The sun was
shining in on them…transforming Lauren’s blonde hair into golden
locks.
“God doesn’t promise us that we will
live forever here on this earth, but he promises to be with us forever.” Nana
said.
Lauren looked up.
“Once a person becomes a Christian God
promises to never leave them.”
“How do you know that?” Lauren
asked.
Nana got out her old Bible and turned to Psalms.
Psalms 125:2
As the mountains [are] round about Jerusalem, so the LORD [is] round about
his people from henceforth even for ever.
She explained how God had always been there for her; during the best of times, and during the difficult times. She told Lauren God was the only constant in a Christian’s life…people will come into our lives, and people will leave us…but God will always be there…HE is forever. Lauren thought back on that past summer, when she had asked esus into her heart. She smiled. She then wondered aboutLaney. Had she ever asked Jesus into her heart? Lauren asked her grandmother if they could talk to Laney when she woke up...she wanted Laney to know that God would be with her forever. She gave her Nana a hug and told her that she loved her. She then askedif she would make her another grilled cheese sandwich.
She was very hungry.
The Moral of the story…Unleashed:
Psalms
125:2 As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his
people from henceforth even for ever. Like a mountain…God surrounds His
children…He has promised to be with us forever…and HE will forever protect HIS children.
