Who the ocean belongs to
Cara sat on the dock and watched the birds flying above. This was her favorite place
to come, she and her aunt Kate liked to sit bare foot on the dock and let their feet soak in
the cool water. Sometimes they stay until after sunset, when the clouds turned from orange and pink to a dark purple.
Aunt Kate threw some rocks into the water, making a small splash. She had been trying to teach Cara how to skip a rock. Cara tried so hard, but still couldn’t figure out how to do it. Aunt Kate assured her if she would practice, then someday she would be able to skip rocks too! Aunt Kate held Cara’s hand and they looked up at the sky. They always played the cloud game, Cara’s favorite. They would look up at a cloud and try to figure out what it looked like. It always ended with the two of them laughing. This time Cara was real quiet. She looked up at the sky and asked Aunt Kate something that had been bothering her all day.
Cara looked up at her aunt.
“Who owns the ocean?”
Aunt Kate looked out at the big blue depth of the waters and smiled. She explained God made the Heavens and the Earth and every creature in it. She then recited a verse from the Bible.
Psalm 95:5
The sea is his, and he made it; and his hands formed the dry land.
Cara smiled.
“I always thought somebody rich owned the ocean. I didn’t know it was God. Do you think
He minds if we visit it?”
After a long pause Aunt Kate noticed another puzzled look on Cara’s face, so she asked Cara what she was thinking about.
Cara looked up and said, “God must not like pepper.”
“Why do you say that?” Aunt Kate asked.
“Because the ocean is full of salt!”
With that Aunt Kate smiled and shook her
head, “I love you Cara and God does too!”
Aunt Kate tickled Cara under her arms, and the two sat and watched as the sun began to set.
The Moral of the story…Unleashed:
Psalm 95:5
The sea is his, and he made it; and his hands formed the dry land.
God our Father created everything including the ocean, and we get to enjoy all of his wonderful creations!
